The‌ ‌Scandals‌ ‌And‌ ‌Lies‌ ‌Behind‌ ‌The‌ ‌Royal‌ ‌Baby‌ ‌Archie‌

He’s only a few years old, but Archie is already one of the most scandalous members of the Royal Family. That’s because of the secrets, lies, and controversial dramas that have surrounded him ever since Meghan fell pregnant.

The Queen currently has 11 great-grandchildren, ranging from Savannah Phillips – the eldest – to newly-born Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor. All of them have attracted a lot of love and interest from within the Royal Family, but from an outside perspective, some have been more noteworthy than others. William and Kate’s children, for instance, all received worldwide attention when they were born, given their positions in the line of succession. The reaction to their arrivals was far greater than that of their older cousins, purely because they’re more likely to take to the throne in the future.

Someone else who caught a lot of attention – and is still a huge talking point – is Harry and Meghan’s son Archie. Unfortunately, the reason for this isn’t quite so glamorous. It’s more to do with the secrets, lies, controversies, and scandals that have surrounded him since his parents announced they were expecting. From speculations about who was pregnant with him and when he was born to explosive revelations of offensive language within the Royal Family, he’s never steered clear of drama. That’s probably not a huge surprise, though, given who his parents are. Anywhere that Meghan and Harry go, controversy never seems to be far behind them.

The Royal Family are no strangers to drama and scandal

The Royal Family is very accustomed to scandal and controversy. Over the years, they’ve experienced their fair share of dramas, from Prince Charles’ affair with the Duchess of Cornwall to Harry and Meghan quitting. Usually, when something like this happens, the family avoids commenting on it where possible because they don’t like to engage in gossip.

However, no matter how silent they are, they can’t erase the things that happen. One family member who’s been quite controversial over the years is Prince Harry. Although he’s one of the most beloved royals, his past antics have gotten a lot of people talking. That’s only increased since he and Meghan got together, with their first pregnancy setting the stage for a dramatic turn of events.

Their pregnancy announcement wasn’t entirely well-received

After tying the knot in May 2018, the newlyweds wasted no time progressing their relationship. Several months after the wedding, they announced that they were pregnant, with the baby due sometime in the spring. The news was received with a lot of praise, with much of the public yet to turn against the couple. However, not everyone was overjoyed.

By that point, some had already begun losing trust in Harry and Meghan, particularly the latter. They refused to accept that the announcement – which came at the start of their first royal tour – was anything other than a call for attention. After all, revealing it when they did meant their pregnancy would be the main topic of discussion as they hopped from one country to the next.

The couple apparently told the royals about the pregnancy at Princess Eugenie’s wedding

Although the public learned about the baby when the duo began the tour, the Royal Family was informed slightly earlier. This makes sense, given that most people tell their loved ones the good news before sharing it with others. Plus, this was a royal baby and Prince Harry’s first child, so the Queen couldn’t exactly find out the truth with the rest of the world.

Unfortunately, it appears the couple didn’t have the best timing with their announcement. They allegedly chose to reveal the news a few days earlier than their public announcement at Princess Eugenie’s wedding. Relations between the bride and mother-to-be allegedly weren’t that great, so stealing the former’s thunder on her big day probably wasn’t the brightest idea.

Some accused Meghan of faking her pregnancy bump

As soon as people knew that Meghan was pregnant, interest in her increased significantly. She was already a major talking point, what with her supposedly being an unconventional choice of wife for a working royal. Unfortunately, this fascination with her life wasn’t always for the best. Regarding her pregnancy, some couldn’t help but accuse the expectant mother of wearing a fake bump.

They believed some clues suggested she wasn’t really with child, such as one moment when she managed to bend down despite being heavily pregnant. They also insinuated that her belly wasn’t growing at a proportional rate, with the Duchess’ bump apparently sometimes appearing much bigger after a short period of time. People suggested this was due to her moving up a size in fake pregnancy bumps.

Harry and Meghan’s secrecy during the pregnancy only fuelled the rumors

Naturally, the couple never acknowledged these rumors, nor did any of the other royals. However, they also didn’t help quell people’s suspicions either. Throughout the pregnancy, Harry and Meghan made it their mission to keep as much information about the baby to themselves. This was their child, and they didn’t feel it necessary to share every little detail with the public.

Unfortunately, in being so secretive, they only fuelled the rumors that surrounded them. There was more room for people to pick up on the tiniest detail and stretch it into an accusation without the parents ever denying it. Had Harry and Meghan said something, it probably wouldn’t have made much of a difference, but it still could have had an impact of sorts.

Meghan was accused of attention-seeking for holding her bump

Accusations of attention-seeking are something that Meghan has probably gotten used to over the last few years. Plenty of people have thrown that term her way, claiming that she does what she does because she wants to be the center of attention. That’s what happened during her first pregnancy, with some calling her actions hypocritical.

They claimed she wanted to have her cake and eat it too because she desired privacy, yet seemingly drew attention to her bump at every opportunity. Whenever Meghan was out in public, she often held her belly, an act that drew a surprising amount of criticism. Most experts claimed that this was natural for an expectant mother to do and that it was good for the baby. Not everyone agreed.

The couple apparently knew Archie’s gender before the birth

Whenever a royal pregnancy is announced, there’s a lot of excitement around guessing certain details. People take bets on things like what their name will be and who they’ll have as godparents, as well as the baby’s gender. The latter is something that many parents discover before giving birth, but in the Royal Family, it’s uncommon to do this.

More often than not, they’ll leave the gender as a surprise, meaning everyone learns the truth after the birth. Supposedly, this was what happened with Archie. However, according to ‘Finding Freedom,’ Harry and Meghan did actually know they were having a boy before he was born. They simply kept that fact from everyone else, thereby adding another lie to their collection.

Meghan’s baby shower wasn’t too well received in the U.K.

In America, baby showers are incredibly common. Things are a little different across the pond, though, particularly with the Royal Family. Although they’re not one to turn down a party, they usually avoid throwing baby showers for expectant mothers. Of course, that didn’t stop Meghan from having her own when she was pregnant with Archie.

While the royals might not have cared to host the event, her good friend Serena Williams was more than happy to take the reins. She organized a bash fit for a former Hollywood starlet, with Meghan even flying to the U.S. to enjoy the party. It was an excellent opportunity for the expectant mother to escape for a few days, much to the annoyance of the public and other royals.

The public was initially unaware that Archie arrived in the early hours on May 6

When the couple announced their pregnancy, they revealed that their baby was due in the spring. That vague due date never changed, meaning that no one had any idea when the child would arrive for the best part of a year. It was another detail that caused annoyance, with some people claiming it was further proof that the pregnancy was suspicious.

Nevertheless, Archie did eventually arrive on May 6, 2019, coming into the world in the early hours of the morning. Although he was apparently overdue by more than a week, the birth was relatively smooth, with the family unit back home by that afternoon. At that point, the public was still clueless about what had happened, and they were about to be in for a shock.

People were upset about how the news of the birth came out

Two announcements were made that afternoon, the first of which suggested that Meghan was in labor. This was followed by another revelation roughly half an hour later, which revealed that Archie had been born. While some were delighted for the new parents, others were stunned at how the couple had misled them.

The first announcement seemed to indicate that Meghan was currently giving birth, even though that had already happened some hours ago. They felt lied to, and it wasn’t just the public who was annoyed. The media were also furious with the couple, especially as it seemed like the pair had gone out of their way to make their jobs harder. Having just become new parents, though, Harry and Meghan probably weren’t that bothered.

Harry’s interview after Archie’s birth drew some criticism

Not long after announcing Archie’s birth, Harry gave a brief interview to share his excitement about becoming a new father. As a working royal, the man’s actions had more to do with his position in the family than a desire to discuss his son with the media. Nevertheless, he went ahead with the interview, seemingly too overjoyed to care that much.

Unfortunately, even this attracted some negative attention, with some accusing his words and actions of being nothing but lies. They claimed that if he really had just watched his wife give birth, he’d be acting “more like a man” than what he presented on camera. Once again, they put forward the notion that he and his wife had actually used a surrogate.

Some weren’t happy about the couple forgoing the post-birth hospital photo

In recent decades, it’s become customary for royal mothers to stand outside the hospital with their newborns shortly after giving birth. Diana did it – in fact, she started the trend – Kate did it, but Meghan did not. She and Harry had no desire to parade their baby in front of the media mere hours after giving birth.

That’s likely why the news of Archie’s arrival wasn’t made public until after the couple had already returned home with their baby. The decision not to have photos taken outside the hospital wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment thing. People knew this wasn’t going to happen months before Archie was born, not that this helped. If anything, it gave them more time to get riled up over the couple breaking tradition.

No one in the Royal Family ever demanded that the photograph be taken

Given that royal mothers have been taking these photos for decades now, it seemed like an unwritten rule that Meghan would follow suit. However, not only were the couple against the idea but at no point did the royals actually tell them to do it. There was never a situation where someone came forward and demanded they take the photo, to which Meghan and Harry said no.

They simply decided they weren’t going to do it, and that was that. According to the new mother, the monarchy’s indifference to the photo was apparently tied to Archie holding less importance in the line of succession than some of his cousins. Being seventh-in-line to the throne and without a title to his name, he was simply less important.

Meghan’s maternity leave prompted speculation she gave birth earlier than announced

Meghan’s job as a working royal might have been different from the average woman’s occupation, but it still came with some familiar benefits. That included maternity leave, which the expectant mother took around mid-March 2019. The Duchess ceased attending public events and largely spent the final weeks of her pregnancy at home preparing for her new arrival.

The fact that she was out of view for so long raised suspicions with some people, especially as it was almost two months before she eventually gave birth. For all the public knew, Meghan had actually delivered Archie several weeks earlier, and the couple had just kept the information to themselves. Given their history, it apparently wasn’t out of the question for them to lie like that.

There’s supposedly evidence that Archie was born several weeks earlier

It wasn’t merely the fact that Meghan was out of the public eye for nearly two months that prompted this theory. Some believe that Harry actually slipped up during the post-birth interview when he talked about how much babies change over two weeks. They’re certain he was actually talking about his own child, rather than kids in general, suggesting that Archie had arrived sometime in late April.

They back this up with the ambulance that appeared at Frogmore Cottage around this time, as well as the visit the Queen paid them shortly after. Of course, even if Meghan did give birth then, neither she nor Harry are ever going to come forward and admit it. If they deceived the public, they did so for a reason.

People were suspicious of Meghan’s desire to give birth at home

Assuming that everything presented by Harry and Meghan is the truth, Archie was born in the early hours at Portland Hospital. His arrival here is a little surprising, given that the public was under the impression that Meghan was aiming for a home birth. This is one of the details that came to light months earlier and was another source of frustration for some.

After all, if Meghan planned on delivering Archie at home, there was a greater chance that she could hide the truth from the world. If she was using a surrogate, or if the baby did come sooner than announced, she’d have a better chance of keeping that a secret if she stayed at home. However, a home birth never came to fruition.

Meghan supposedly knew she’d be giving birth in a hospital several months earlier

The story presented in the media was that Meghan was eager for a home birth and was determined to have things her way. Why things didn’t work out that way is unclear, but she was supposedly fixated on staying away from the hospital. However, according to ‘Finding Freedom,’ that’s not true. The book claims that Meghan knew she wouldn’t be having a home birth several months before Archie arrived.

Although she was interested in doing things at home, she wasn’t obsessed with the idea. The only thing that actually mattered was delivering Archie in the safest possible way so that he’d arrive happy and healthy. In her case, that evidently meant giving birth in Portland Hospital rather than at Frogmore Cottage.

Changes to Archie’s birth certificate raised a few eyebrows

After Archie was born, his birth certificate proved to be a vital document. After all, it would potentially shed light on what actually happened when he came into this world. However, the certificate has done nothing more than cause greater confusion and paint the couple in a questionable light. A month after the document was made, several changes were reportedly made to the parents’ names.

In Meghan’s case, her first name and middle name were removed, while for Harry, the title of “Prince” was added. This caused controversy for several reasons, but despite all the accusations thrown Harry and Meghan’s way, they apparently weren’t responsible. It was supposedly Buckingham Palace that made the edits; the parents had nothing to do with it.

The media were banned from having any involvement with Archie’s christening

A royal christening has never been a public event. The service has always been conducted behind closed doors, with only invited guests allowed to watch everything unfold. However, in the past, the media has still played a role in documenting the event. They’ve been permitted to wait outside and take photos of people coming and going, ensuring the public still feels involved with what’s going on.

That changed when it came to Archie’s christening, though. The luxuries offered to the media for his cousins’ christenings were retracted, meaning the service was a wholly private affair. If it weren’t for the two photos posted on the couple’s social media feed, people might not have known that a christening had even happened.

Details regarding Archie’s godparents were hidden from the public

One reason people are interested in royal christenings is that they want to know who the child’s godparents are. These people play a vital role in the service, so seeing who’s in attendance can clear a few things up. Discussion around Archie’s godparents began before the boy was even born, with plenty of big names thrown into the ring.

The likes of George Clooney and Serena Williams were hot favorites because of their relationship with Meghan. However, the couple refused to share who they’d chosen for the roles, despite the obvious interest. Although the names have since come out, it wasn’t until long after the service that such details emerged. By that point, the fascination around their identities had simmered down.

Meghan returned to the public eye a month after Archie’s birth but without her son

Given all the secrecy around the boy, the public was desperate for a glimpse of him. The photos they got of Archie several days after the birth weren’t enough, and they kept hoping that he’d pop up at one event or another. Of course, Archie wasn’t likely to show his face until Meghan did, and with her being on maternity leave, she was in no rush to return to work.

The Duchess eventually reappeared a month after the birth when she attended the Trooping the Colour event for the Queen’s birthday. However, she arrived without a child, causing some confusion with the public. If Meghan couldn’t bear to be apart from the boy, why was he nowhere to be seen?

Meghan’s apparent determination to hide her son from the world didn’t sit right with everyone. However, the Duchess didn’t completely shield the boy from view. The duo was seen together on the odd occasion, including when the two of them watched a polo game that Harry was involved in. The prince was there competing against his brother while their wives stood on the sidelines with the kids.

Given that Meghan was there with Archie, this should have been a happy moment for the public. However, when people weren’t discussing the supposed rivalry between the two women, they were accusing Meghan of being a bad mom. Most notably, that claimed that she was holding Archie wrong, using that as ammunition to attack her mothering skills.

Archie never received a title when he was born, despite much speculation beforehand

When Prince George was born, there was no doubt he’d receive a title. There was less certainty that Princess Charlotte would receive the same treatment, but then the Queen went and changed the rules to ensure she did. Given what the monarch did for William’s children, people assumed that she’d do the same for Harry’s kid.

However, when Archie was born, there wasn’t a title in sight. He wasn’t a prince or an earl; he was just Archie. The reason for why this happened wasn’t entirely clear, but the assumption was that Meghan and Harry were responsible. After all, they were determined to live a more private life that involved giving their son a relatively normal childhood, so why would they give him a title?

The royals allegedly wanted to block Archie from ever becoming a prince

In the years since Archie’s birth, new information has come to light that suggests Meghan and Harry weren’t responsible for denying the boy a title. Instead, it was the royals who reportedly never offered him one in the first place. What’s more, they allegedly wanted to alter a convention to ensure he would never receive one.

It seems that when Charles becomes king, Archie will be entitled to become a prince. That’s because of a rule established over a century ago, which states that all of the monarch’s grandchildren are entitled to such an honor. However, it appears that someone in the Royal Family wanted to change this long-standing tradition because they had no desire for Archie to eventually become a prince.

Plenty of scandalous revelations came out during the couple’s interview with Oprah

This revelation about Archie’s princely title came out during an interview that Meghan and Harry had with Oprah. Of course, this was hardly the only scandalous detail that emerged during the pair’s conversation with the host. The duo seemed to drop one bombshell after another as they discussed what life was like in the Royal Family.

Some of the things they touched on in the interview included Meghan’s mental health, strained relations with the family, and the prejudice Archie experienced before he was even born. The scandalous accusations were a lot to take in, although the couple’s willingness to share them wasn’t a huge surprise. After all, this wasn’t the first time they’d caused a stir by giving a surprisingly open interview.

The couple was upset that Archie was denied the level of protection he deserved

Despite their desire to move away from the Royal Family and have more privacy, Harry and Meghan were seemingly upset about Archie not receiving a title. However, this apparently had nothing to do with them believing he deserved to be a prince or something similar. Instead, they were annoyed because not having a title meant he wouldn’t receive the same protection that he’d get if he had one.

Source: Press Association

Given how passionate the couple is about keeping their son safe, it’s understandable why this would be a cause for concern. They don’t agree that his security should be compromised just because he’s not closer to the throne. After all, as a royal, he’s still incredibly vulnerable, no matter his chances of becoming king.

Someone in the monarchy allegedly expressed concerns about Archie’s skin color to Harry

Archie being treated differently than his cousins was notable for several reasons. The fact that he was the first child of color in the Royal Family didn’t escape the couple’s attention. In fact, they believe this was influential in why the boy didn’t receive the benefits they may have expected. After all, Harry apparently heard firsthand from someone within the monarchy that they were concerned about Archie’s skin color.

During the interview with Oprah, the couple refused to reveal who had expressed such fears. However, they didn’t shy away from exposing what went down, sharing that at least one person was worried the boy’s skin would be too dark. After conversations like that, it might be no wonder the couple wanted to escape the Royal Family.

These offensive concerns may have influenced the couple’s behavior during the pregnancy

These supposed fears about Archie’s skin color came long before the boy was even born. It was reportedly early into the pregnancy that these conversations happened, something that understandably gave the couple cause for concern. If things really did play out this way, it’s probably not that surprising that they made such an effort to keep things a secret.

If someone within the monarchy was raising red flags about Archie’s skin, the chances are that plenty of people outside the family would do the same. So, rather than put their son at risk and parade him around potentially offensive people, they instead kept him out of sight as much as possible. For Harry and Meghan, it was probably far better to be safe than sorry.

Offensive language is something Meghan’s grew accustomed to as a royal

Unfortunately for Meghan, these offensive remarks probably didn’t come as a surprise. As a woman of color, she’s undoubtedly experienced attitudes like this throughout her life, especially with the career she embarked on. Once she entered into a relationship with Harry, things probably grew worse. Even if people claimed it was her being American or an actress that made her an unsuitable royal, she knew the truth.

Years of unconscious bias and microaggressions meant it was easy to tell that some people simply didn’t like her because she wasn’t the same color as the other royals. Although her presence in the Royal Family could have changed things for the better regarding racial issues, that’s a huge burden for one woman to carry alone.

The couple’s interview doesn’t read as honest to everyone

Of course, just because Harry and Meghan claim that something is true, that doesn’t mean their version of events is correct. This is merely one side of the story, and whether you believe it or not depends on your own views. It doesn’t help that the other royals will likely never talk about what was said, meaning we’ll never see things from both points of view.

Plenty are unwilling to take the couple at their word, certain that this is just the duo trying to do damage control after their scandalous departure from the family. The fact that some people believe they’ve disproved several of the remarks made in the interview means they have no reason to trust anything else that was said.

The couple’s desire to protect Archie may stem from the trauma Princess Diana experienced

Much of the annoyance around Harry, Meghan, and Archie has been tied to their secrecy and insistence on breaking tradition. Throughout their time in the Royal Family, the couple seemed to constantly want to do things their way, regardless of what was expected of them. However, that doesn’t mean their actions always came from a selfish place. Nearly everything they did during the pregnancy and birth was to keep Archie safe.

Harry experienced firsthand what can happen when the media and public become too absorbed in the life of a royal. His mother would potentially still be here if she was given the privacy that the couple craves for both themselves and their children. The last thing they want is a repeat of what happened to Princess Diana.

Judging Archie against William’s children doesn’t make for an equal comparison

Archie is hardly the Queen’s only great-grandchild. In fact, he’s one of 11. However, despite how many other children there are in the Royal Family, the boy is only ever compared to a select few. These are Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis – William and Kate’s kids. It’s understandable why, given that William and Harry are brothers and these children are more well-known than any of their other cousins.

Judging Archie against William's children doesn't make for an equal comparison
Source: Instagram/kensingtonroyal

However, it’s not exactly an equal comparison, seeing as George and his siblings are far more likely to ascend to the throne one day. Of course these three are raised to be perfect royals because at least one of them will likely become a monarch in the future. The expectations for Archie shouldn’t be the same.

News of a second pregnancy revived claims of surrogacy

As soon as Meghan gave birth, talk emerged of when the couple would have a second child. Given they’d literally just welcomed Archie into the world, they were obviously in no rush to provide him with a sibling. However, in February 2021, the duo shared the good news that another baby was on the way. Unfortunately, amidst all the well-wishes was a new wave of theories regarding the pregnancy.

It seems that people were once again adamant the bump was a fake, with online searches for such results increasing by several thousand percent. If the couple had used a surrogate before, it would make sense that they’d do so again. However, the surrogacy claims were never proven, and they probably never will be.

A baby girl was born after little information was provided during the pregnancy

Not much information was revealed when the pregnancy was announced. If the situation were anything like the last time, then presumably, the baby wouldn’t arrive until the fall. However, that was disproven in June 2021 when the couple shared the news that their second child had arrived. Named Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor in honor of Harry’s mother and grandmother, the revelation came two days after the girl was born.

Given that the couple are no longer working royals, there was less expectation for them to break the news as soon as it happened. Of course, some people were still annoyed by the delay, especially as so little had been shared about the pregnancy over the last few months. The couple knows there’s no pleasing everyone, though.

The couple’s past decisions will always influence how some people see them now

Given the critiques thrown Meghan’s way as soon as she and Harry became an item, it was clear that the couple would never be universally loved. After all, no member of the Royal Family is without their share of haters. Unfortunately, things only seemed to go from bad to worse for these two, particularly once the baby bump came along.

Although their actions have always been about putting their child first, the decisions they’ve made have often rubbed people up the wrong way. Resorting to lying and misleading the public didn’t do them any favors, which is why some people refuse to accept anything they say now. This is something they’ll always have to live with, but it’s unlikely that the couple are going to lose sleep over it.
